Stephen Foster (1826-1864)

The name Stephen Foster may not “ring a bell”, but you certainly know some of this great American composer’s folk songs:
  • Oh! Susanna (sung by many a child)
  • Camptown Races (immortalized in Bugs Bunny cartoons)
  • My Old Kentucky Home (sung yearly at the Kentucky Derby)
Born in Pennsylvania, he began to write music at an early age. His music was influenced by the sentimental songs his sisters enjoyed, the music from black church services his family attended with their servant, popular minstrel show

My Side of the Mountain for Your Middle Schooler

If you have a child who loves the outdoors or is fascinated with survival skills, or if you want to have a discussion about Natural Science or the works of Thoreau in your homeschool, My Side of the Mountain is just the movie to watch and study with your middle schooler (or keen younger student). Perhaps you have even read the book together and would like to watch the movie as part of your study of the book itself.
