Bertram Cate’s, a young science teacher, is arrested for violating a Tennessee law forbidding the teaching of evolution in public schools. The well- known politician Matthew Harrison Brady agrees to assist the prosecution, while the Baltimore Herald provides him with a defense lawyer, the venerable Henry Drummond. Drummond puts Brady on the witness stand and makes a fool of him, yet the jury still finds Cates guilty.
